If you've had an accident in a vehicle you use for your business, here is what to do and who to tell. Report it as soon as you can, even if the damage looks minor.
Step 1. Make sure everyone is safe
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt or the vehicles block traffic.
- Move to a safe place if you can.
- Call the police if your state or the situation calls for a report, and get the report number.
Step 2. Collect the details
While you're at the scene, or as soon as you can after:
- Date, time and exact location.
- Names, phone numbers and addresses of the other drivers, plus their insurance company and policy number.
- License plates, makes and models of every vehicle involved.
- Names and phone numbers of any witnesses.
- Photos of the vehicles, the damage and the scene.
- The name of your driver, if it was an employee.
Don't admit fault or agree to pay anyone at the scene. Leave that to the insurance companies.
Step 3. Report it to your insurance company
Call your insurance company's claims number right away. You'll find it on your auto ID card or on your policy. Many insurance companies also take claims online or in their app. Have your policy number and the details from Step 2 ready, and write down the claim number they give you.
Step 4. Tell Rikor if we're your agency
If Rikor is your insurance agency, also email support@rikor.io with your business name, the date of the accident, a short description and your claim number. We can help you follow up with the insurance company. Don't wait for us to report the claim; report it to the insurance company first.
Step 5. Tell your franchisor if your agreement requires it
Some franchise agreements require you to notify the franchisor about accidents or claims. Check your franchise agreement or operations manual, and notify them if it does.
Good to know
- Keep copies of everything: the police report, photos, repair estimates and any letters from the insurance companies.
- If you have questions about what your policy covers, ask your insurance company or your agent. For legal questions, talk to your own attorney.
